Children's Museums in Westchester County, New York

Westchester County, New York is home to cities including White Plains, Yonkers and Salem. While there is not a dedicated children's museum in the Westchester County area (the Westchester Children's Museum is scheduled for completion in 2011), there are several museums that have special exhibits, activities and workshops for their smaller visitors.
  1. Hudson River Museum

    • The Hudson River Museum is located in central Yonkers, the largest city in Westchester county. The museum offers a variety of exhibits ranging from art to sculpture, and "all of it draws its identity from its site on the banks of the Hudson River," according to the museum. The Hudson Riverama, designed just for kids, is a video tour of the area highlighting the birds, animals, and land of the Hudson River Valley. The "School's Out, Stars Are In" program offers children school-age and above a chance to explore the skies at the museum's planetarium. The Hudson River Museum offers school tours, customized just for children, daily upon request.

    Beczak Environmental Education Center

    • Beczak is an outdoor museum in Yonkers that is focused on the Hudson River and its inhabitants. According to the center, "all children need to safely interact with the natural environment for healthy development." Interactive activities just for kids include measuring tides and petting eels. Educational tours created just for kids are sponsored by the museum each day, and the interactive tour components meet the New York State Department of Education Learning Standards, so class credit is often given to young students touring the center.

Garden types include Hill and Pond, Dry Landscape, Stroll, Tea, and Courtyard. All gardens offer hidden spots and plenty of exploration for kids.
