Identify as much as you can about the painting. Begin with any information you have about the painting, including the approximate date, medium or genre. It may also help to determine the physical location of the painting in MOMA as well as the exhibit or show to which the painting belonged. These factors can help you find similar works and may lead you to your specific painting.
Perform an Internet image search with the information you have collected. Try entering different pieces of information at a time to vary your results.
Search using an online art archive. The Internet has several free online art archives which you may use to identify the name of a painting. You can search by image, artist, age, genre and other criteria in your search.
Search the MOMA collection web site. You can filter your search results to display results with images, within a specific department or decade.
Contact MOMA directly. You can contact the museum via telephone, email or letter. Provide them with the information you have collected, and they can help you narrow down or even identify the painting from their archives.
