How to Get Rid of Stains From Silk

It's easy to get rid of stains from silk. Although taking the item to the dry cleaners may be the most convenient way to remove the stains, cleaning bills can quickly add up. You can remove stubborn stains by focusing on the stain itself, as opposed to having the entire garment professionally cleaned at your local dry cleaners. All you'll need to complete the project is a few easy-to-find items.

Things You'll Need

  • Diluted ammonia
  • Cream of tartar
  • Glycerin
  • Crushed aspirin
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Soft fabric cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Sponge the area with clean water. Rub glycerin into the stain. Let it sit for an hour. Rinse the area with warm water, then sponge the affected area with diluted ammonia.

    • 2

Apply diluted vinegar to older stains and use a sponge to dab the mixture onto the section of silk. Crush aspirin and mix with water and cream of tartar. Place it on the stain and let it sit for 25 minutes. Thoroughly rinse the section with clean water, then spot dry.

    • 3

Scrape away any residue like hardened food if you find pieces on the silk. Carefully clean the affected spot with soapy water. Mix ammonia and alcohol together in equal parts. Dampen the area with the solution. Let it sit for 25 minutes, then clean with water and pat dry.
