How to Make a Mold for Fiberglass Hulls

The hulls of boats are manufactured with many different materials. Depending on your personal preference, you can use carbon fiber, hardwood and metal or even fiberglass. Known as the most accessible hull-making material, fiberglass is preferred by boat makers because of its quotient of strength to its weight bearing properties.

Things You'll Need

  • Fiberglass
  • Wooden stirrer
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Epoxy
  • Boat hull
  • Epoxy spreader
  • Polyethylene cup

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety goggles and work gloves. Turn the boat hull over. Begin to coat the hull with FRP mold resin when you have it upside down. Don't be afraid to use a lot of the FRP substance. If you don't use enough, the epoxy can adhere to the boat hull permanently. If this happens you'll ruin the boat hull and mold.

    • 2

Sever the lengths of fiberglass. Use the rotary cutter to make the lengths the same scope as the hull of the boat. Utilize a wood or plastic stirrer to blend the epoxy in a cup.

    • 3

Place a sheet of fiberglass on the hull. Empty the cup of epoxy over the hull. Extend the epoxy equally over the hull. Use the epoxy spreader to spread the liquid. Allow the epoxy to cure for four hours.

    • 4

Take the fiberglass mold off the hull of the boat. Set it steady and upright. Use the FRP mold release to coat the interior of the mold. You may now use the mold to make fiberglass hulls.
