The Globe
The Globe was a theater built in 1599 by Richard Burbage and his brother Cuthbert. It was located on the south bank of the River Thames, just outside the City of London. The Globe was a large, circular building with a thatched roof and an open-air courtyard. It could hold up to 3,000 people.
Shakespeare's company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men (later known as the King's Men), performed at The Globe from 1599 until 1613. During this time, Shakespeare wrote some of his most famous plays, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth.
The Globe was destroyed by fire in 1613. It was rebuilt in 1614, but it was closed down by the Puritans in 1642.
The Curtain
The Curtain was another theater located on the south bank of the River Thames. It was built in 1577 and was one of the first theaters in London. The Curtain was a smaller theater than The Globe, and it could hold up to 1,500 people.
Shakespeare's company performed at The Curtain from 1594 until 1599. During this time, Shakespeare wrote some of his early plays, including The Taming of the Shrew, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, and A Midsummer Night's Dream.
The Curtain was closed down in 1629.
In addition to The Globe and The Curtain, Shakespeare's plays were also performed at other theaters in London, including The Rose, The Swan, and The Fortune.
