What did theatre look like in 1599?

Stages

* Were bare platforms, jutting out into the audience.

* No painted backdrops. Instead, musicians or the actors themselves provided sound effects.

* No curtains or scenery. Props and costumes were used to indicate setting.

Actors

* All male. Women not allowed to perform until Restoration 1660s.

* Roles for women played by boys or young men.

* Social Status: considered rogues, vagabonds.

* Some troupes: adult males and boys. King’s Men.

Audience

* Mixed - all social classes.

* Public theatres: “penny theaters.” Admission cost 1 penny.

* Private theatres: Wealthier patrons. Admission: shillings.

* Seated on benches or standing.

* Attendees were very involved in the performance, and often rowdy.
