How did people during William time wear their hair?

Men:

- For the first half of the Norman period, men continued to wear their hair in a similar fashion to the late Anglo-Saxon period, typically shoulder-length or longer and often parted in the middle.

- By the end of the 11th century, however, the influence of the French had led to the adoption of shorter hairstyles, often cropped close to the head, with long, curling locks at the sides and back.

- Beards were common, but not universal.

- The king typically wore his hair shorter than his subjects, often in a style known as the "crown", with the hair cropped close to the head except for a circular fringe around the crown.

Women:

- Women typically wore their hair long and loose, often with a central parting, and sometimes braided.

- A distinctive style of the period was to divide the hair into two plaits, which were then wrapped around the head and secured with pins or ribbons.

- Veils were often worn over the hair, especially by married women.
