How to Create a Metal Punch Shape

Metal punch shapes may be applied to numerous furniture objects or decorative hangings. Some artists choose to create elaborate shapes of animals and flowers, and then punch these designs with detailed accents. Others select geometric panels or regular shapes, and adorn them with punched designs. To create a punched metal shape, you need little more than a pattern, a hammer and a nail. Remember to work on a secure wooden surface or use stacked paper beneath your metal panel as you punch it.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a pattern, shape or image that you wish to punch. Any image with strong lines will work as a template for this craft. Print an image from your computer, tear a page from a book, or draw your own pattern on a sheet of paper.

    • 2

Put on protective gloves before handling metal.

    • 3

Place the paper with the pattern facing upward on your metal sheet. Secure the pattern to the metal with masking tape on the edges.

    • 4

Place the metal sheet onto a secure wooden surface. You will punch a nail through this sheet repeatedly, so make sure that nothing underneath will be damaged by this activity.

    • 5

      Put on protective goggles.

    • 6

Place the nail on one of the lines of your pattern. Hold the nail in place, and punch it through the metal with the hammer. Only punch the nail until it breaks the surface of the metal. Do not nail it entirely into the sheet.

    • 7

Continue punching the nail through the metal for the entire shape of the pattern.

    • 8

      Remove pattern and tape.
