What was expected of a bride in Shakespeare?

* Chastity: Brides were expected to be virgins on their wedding night. This was considered so important that if a bride was not a virgin, her husband could annul the marriage.

* Obedience: Wives were expected to be obedient to their husbands in all things. This meant that they had to do what their husbands told them to do, even if they did not agree with them.

* Silence: Women were expected to be seen and not heard. This meant that they should not speak unless spoken to, and that they should never express their opinions in public.

* Modesty: Women were expected to dress modestly and to avoid any behavior that could be considered unladylike. This meant that they should not show their ankles or cleavage, and that they should never dance or sing in public.
