Why did shakespeare change the character of real Macbeth completely in his play?

William Shakespeare did not change the character of Macbeth significantly in his play. Although he took creative liberties and added dialogue, Shakespeare mostly followed the historical accounts of Macbeth's life and actions. The true Macbeth, as depicted in history, was an ambitious and ruthless ruler, and Shakespeare retained these characteristics in his portrayal of the character.
