Why do commedia arte characters wear masks?

Symbolic Meaning

The masks used in commedia dell'arte are highly stylized, and each one represents a specific stock character. For example, the Dottore is always depicted with a long nose, while the Pantalone wears a tight-fitting suit and a mask with a hooked nose and a goatee. These masks give the characters a distinct, exaggerated appearance that helps to create the comedic effect of commedia dell'arte.

Anonymity

The masks also serve to create a sense of anonymity for the actors. This allows the actors to fully inhabit the role of the character they are playing, without being constrained by their own personal identity. This freedom allows for greater creativity and expression, and it helps to create the chaotic and unpredictable atmosphere of commedia dell'arte.
