Why did harker not want the crucifix in Dracula?

In Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula," Harker does not refuse to bring a crucifix with him when he travels to Castle Dracula. In fact, he specifically packs a crucifix, along with other religious symbols like a rosary and holy water, as a means of protection against the vampire.
