Why did goth start?

Goth subculture is associated with music genres such as Gothic rock and post-punk and it is derived from the British rock scene of the late 1970s. Some music historians credit bands like Bauhaus, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Joy Division with pioneering what would later be known as Gothic rock, while others cite deathrock bands that came out of the US punk scene as an earlier antecedent to goth music.
