Why did shakespeares plays have many leading female roles?

William Shakespeare's plays do not, in fact, have many leading female roles. During the Elizabethan era in England, when Shakespeare lived and wrote, women were not allowed to perform on stage. All female roles were played by young boys. Because of this, Shakespeare's plays often featured male characters in disguise as women or plots that focused on male characters with little to no significant female presence.
