How to Make Your Legs Appear Thin Onstage

If you are performing onstage, you could be self-conscious of a particular physical trait. Theatrical performers, musicians and comedians all share the desire to give a top-notch show and would prefer that audience members focus on that aspect, rather than on their body weight or shape. Just as a mask can instantly transform a beautiful actress into a monster, you can give the illusion of your legs being thinner than they really are.

Things You'll Need

  • Dark or vertically pinstriped clothing
  • Heeled shoes

Nicely fitted dark pants provide the perfect recipe for creating lean-looking legs.

Select high-quality, dark-colored pants that are simple and without patterns or unique style. Make sure these fit you properly and are not too tight, which can draw unwanted attention. Pants should not be too baggy, which can make you appear larger than you are. Straight leg with a slight flare at the bottom and ending just above the floor is a good choice.

Wear heeled shoes that are easy to walk in. Extra height dramatically increases the illusion of lean legs. Be sure to practice walking naturally in the heels, so you can glide across the stage with ease. Your pants should be long enough to cover the majority of the heels, with just the tip of the shoe and part of the heel visible.

A classic pump worn in your skin tone slims the legs.

Select a pair of flesh-toned or beige-colored heels that create continuity within your legs, especially if wearing a skirt. Avoid stilettos or any type of shoe that has straps cutting across the front, as these can make your feet appear bulky. Black shoes draw more attention to your feet, which is not a good choice when wearing a skirt and your legs are exposed.

Walk in long, accentuated and confident strides. If you exude comfort and control while moving across the stage, spectators will be mesmerized by your performance and won't be looking for flaws in your appearance. When standing, use excellent posture that is upright, yet relaxed. Stretching out a leg now and then at elongated angles further demonstrates the illusion of slim legs.

The eyes and face can be as mesmerizing as thin legs.

Use your eyes and hands to accent appropriate parts within your performance. This distracts the audience from looking at your bottom half, as they stay focused on your facial and hand gestures. Keep your hands at shoulder level and higher and you will appear more "top heavy" than bottom, as all attention will be on the upper portion of your body.

Situate yourself in the most complimentary lighting angles. Spotlights shining down on you and landing mostly on your face are a good choice, but can sometimes make you appear squat. Floor lighting can be flattering if the majority of it reaches your upper body, and this can also make you appear taller. If possible, experiment with the lighting before the show to find the best choices.

A ponytail, eye-popping makeup and a neck scarf elongate the body.

Don accessories such as a short necklace or simple, trendy hat. A short, choker-style necklace makes your neck look longer and leaner, which is reflected throughout your body. Wear the choker with a buttoned shirt that has several buttons open, and you will really lengthen your legs. A cute hat can work wonders as well, but be sure it doesn't cover your face. If you have long hair, consider wearing a sleek ponytail to add height to your form. Makeup that is fresh and clean, especially around the eyes, also draws the right kind of attention.
