How to Remove Theatrical Adhesive

Part of the thrill of the theater is being able to put on a costume and fully lose yourself in a character. Between the clothes, wig, facial hair and prosthetic pieces, an actor can become an entirely different person in just a few minutes. Getting back to being yourself can sometimes prove to be a challenge, however. Especially if that costume required gluing portions of it to your skin. Costumes often have pieces that require the use of adhesive to stick them directly to the skin and it is important to remove both the costume piece and the adhesive correctly so you do not irritate or damage the skin.

Things You'll Need

  • Adhesive remover or acetone (Either can be used safely, though acetone is harsher on the skin)
  • Cotton ball
  • Soap and water
  • Lotion

Instructions

    • 1

Remove as much of the costume piece as possible.

    • 2

Dab some of the remover or acetone on to a cotton ball.

    • 3

Rub the cotton ball on any remaining adhesive until it comes away from the skin. If any pieces of the costume itself remain attached to the skin, rub the damp cotton ball around the edges of the piece until it comes loose and remove the piece.

    • 4

Re-wet the cotton ball with the adhesive remover if any adhesive remains and repeat until it is no longer sticking to the skin.

    • 5

Wash the area with soap and water to remove any residue or stray adhesive.

    • 6

Apply lotion to the area to prevent the skin from drying out or becoming irritated.
