What does hold mean in theatre?

Hold means "Wait" in theatre productions. Hold will be called during production or rehearsals when needed to pause action. The director might call "hold" to have a private word with an actor or change a blocking. If a sound cue is not played correctly or a stagehand cannot quickly remedy a problem "Hold" can be called at any time and all action stops until the director deems it is a good time to continue.
