Where were plays performed before the globe?

The earliest plays in England were religious dramas performed in churches. Later, plays were performed in guild halls and other public spaces. In the 16th century, playhouses were built for commercial performances. The Globe Theatre was one of the most famous playhouses of the Elizabethan era, and it was where many of Shakespeare's plays were first performed.
