How to Use Mylar in Theater Props

Props play an integral part in any stage production. Using Mylar to make props can give your stage show a more professional look and can amp up your special effects. Mylar grabs the audience's attention and keeps them focused on your stage production.

Instructions

    • 1

Review your script to see where using Mylar would be appropriate. Consider using Mylar for props, backdrops, flats and even costumes.

    • 2

Recycle Mylar balloons to save money making your stage props. Convert the Mylar balloons into confetti by shredding and chopping them. Pouring silver Mylar confetti onto the stage can simulate rain. Try covering plain, wooden props with Mylar to give them sparkle. You can even twist and cut the Mylar balloons to make them into stage jewelry.

Use red Mylar for smoking effects. You can cover the end of a fake cigar or cigarette with red Mylar. Then, adjust your lighting so that when the lights hit the end of the cigar, it looks lit.

    • 4

Create mirrors using Mylar so that you don't have to worry about breaking glass on stage. Mylar mirrors are lightweight and easy to move. By using Mylar for your mirrors, you also avoid distracting the audience with the reflections that real mirrors create.

Adjust your lighting cues to take full advantage of your Mylar stage props. Mylar rain curtains look spectacular when properly lit. You can also use lighting to highlight Mylar confetti for the ultimate glitzy party effect.
