How to Select Theater Seating

Until you are actually sitting in the theater watching a production, you can never be a hundred percent certain about how good your seats are. But do a little preliminary research and book early and you'll have a good chance of getting a great view to the shows you want to see.

Instructions

    • 1

Find out where your chosen event will be, and go to the venue's official website. Search the site for a seating chart; it will often be in a "Tickets" or "About" section. If you can't find one, try going through a ticket vendor site like Ticketmaster or Telecharge (see Resources) and search for seating charts under the venue information there. The chart should detail row and seat numbers.

Check the range of ticket prices for the different sections of seats. You should be able to find this on the venue site under "Tickets" or on the ticket vendor site.

    • 3

Decide where you want to sit. Ask yourself: Do I have budget limits? Do I want to see the actors sweat or do I prefer the spectacle of the show from a farther perspective? See the Tips section for hints about evaluating your options. And keep in mind any other special seating considerations, like aisle seating or handicapped access.

You can now purchase your tickets. Buying over the Internet is easiest, but to get the best information about seating options and availability, call the box office or go to the theater in person to purchase tickets. Use the box office to learn about the production. Ask about visibility of the entire show from different sections of the theater. Avoid slightly discounted seats with partially obstructed views. Refer to the venue seating chart as the ticket seller describes available seats. Popular shows may have limited availability, but if you can be flexible about which night you will attend, you may find more options.
