Legs come in varying heights and styles. Some platforms are available with single-height detachable legs, while others have single-height foldable legging. Perhaps the most versatile is the foldable, adjustable leg, which telescopes to provide varying heights.
Folding frames with castors for easy storage are available for venues where a portable stage is frequently used and put away. The EZ stage by Staging Concepts comes in a 6 by 8 foot version, which folds in half and will store in an area 2 ½ feet wide.
Plywood deck is one of the most rugged ways to go. It can be painted for extra weather resistance. It is light, easily replaceable and typically the cheapest option from most manufacturers.
Polypropylene-rubber-coated stage platforms are great for acts that have back-up dancers or perform in conjunction with variety performers. In addition to dampening the sound and giving skid resistance for drum sets, this surface makes movement much easier.
Hardboard platforms have a very smooth, hard surface, much like Masonite. This type of platform is best left alone for groups that may be performing outside, as it is susceptible to moisture. The finish can be painted or stained.
Carpeted stage platforms are great when the sound of walking across the platforms is a distraction. This type of platform is also good for drum sets and cushions the plywood, providing rest for weary feet. It is not recommended for outdoor venues unless the platforms are brought inside each day after the performance.
Several different methods for combining more than one platform are available. Two of the most common are the heavy-duty wire bracket type connections typically found on school risers. One platform is lifted up and the bracket drops down to nest into the bracket on the other platform, pulling them together.
Coffin locks are another method. A locking mechanism on one platform fits into a lock pocket on the second. Coffin locks go together snugly, providing the tightest seams and a very secure joint.
Stair units are also available, along with railings for the back and sides of your stage. They are both available from most manufacturers to work with the platform frames particular to that brand. Safety is an important part of staging and should be a part of the plan from the beginning.
