How to Keep Your Wig Shiny

Over time, dirt, grime and environmental pollution can cause your wig to lose its shine. Dust and fine particles of debris can also weigh your wig down, making it a challenge to style. Instead of tossing out your lackluster hairpiece in favor of newer model, bring the sparkle back with a few time-honored remedies.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a large plastic bucket with cold water. Add 2 tablespoons of mild shampoo.

    • 2

Soak the wig hair in the soapy water for 60 seconds; avoid scrubbing or rubbing the wig. Scrubbing can cause the locks to dislodge from the underside of the cap.

    • 3

Remove the wig from the soapy water. Empty and refill the bucket with fresh, cold water.

    • 4

Add 2 tablespoons conditioner to the water. Soak the wig again for 60 seconds; remove it from the water.

    • 5

Run a comb through the wig. Blot the locks with a clean towel; avoid squeezing or ruffling the hair, which can inadvertently bend the locks.

    • 6

Drape the wig atop the closed-lid shampoo bottle for one hour to dry. Avoid placing the wig on top of a Styrofoam model head to prevent unwanted stretching.

    • 7

Lubricate your fingertips with 2 tablespoons liquid wig mousse. Run your fingers through the hair; allow the wig one hour to fully dry before handling.
