How to Build a Set Design Model

Set designers work in theater, television or film to design the appearance of the scenery in which the action takes place. One of the first steps in designing the scenery of a production is the production of several models that are scaled down from the dimensions of the stage. A set design model incorporates all the props that appear on the stage, including furniture, walls, doors, windows or plants. An initial white model is often made using elevations based on the dimensions of the design.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the theater or location where the action will take place. Measure the dimensions of the area that will be used with a tape measure and make notes on the shape of the stage.

    • 2

Decide on the scale in which the model will be created. It is common for stage models to be made in 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch scale. A 1/4-inch scale model is easier and faster to design, but the 1/2-inch model provides greater detail and easier alterations made to the set for different scenes.

    • 3

Draw the outline of the stage on pieces of wood and cut the pieces out using a saw. The pieces can include the bottom, back, sides and in some cases, the top of the stage. On the side pieces representing the wings, the center of each piece can be cut out using a jigsaw to allow easy access to the models of props inserted into the model.

    • 4

Sand the edges of the wooden pieces that make up the model box and glue together. Draw the outline of the stage onto white foam board using the dimensions of the real-size stage. Cut out the outline of the stage with scissors and glue the pieces into the model box.

    • 5

Sketch the various pieces that are to be positioned on the stage and glue them into place on the white foam board. Color copies can be used to add interest and detail. Alterations can now be made to the design without great expense being created from the creation of more expensive models of the pieces to be placed on the stage.
