How to Create Medieval Stage Props

Stage props are the literal physical objects that decorate a set during the run of a theatrical play. Props may be aesthetically static -- part of the actual set design -- or handled by actors. Props bring life to a character by providing a sense of authenticity and reality to the given circumstances of the play. Creating medieval stage props are an inventive and entertaining way to bring any theatrical production to life.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sizes of an actor's shoulders, arms, chest and back. Cut out pieces of cardboard to match these dimensions. Wrap every piece with tin foil. Press the foil hard into the cardboard so it remains tight and flush.

    • 2

Hole punch individual holes in the four corners of the shoulder pieces. Punch out holes in the top corners of the chest and back and arm pieces. Tie the pieces together with string to create a suit of armor.

    • 3

Trace and cut out cardboard or plastic swords. Spray the blade and handle of the sword with opposite colors of reflective paint -- silver and gold, for example. Glue on faux gems onto the handle of the sword for greater aesthetic effect.

    • 4

Make a crown out of wire, plastic and cloth. Cut out a plastic tracing of a crown. Fold the cut out so it loops tightly around your head. Mark the point on the crown where it fits tight so you can glue it later. Paint the plastic or use markers to boost the creative appeal. Adhere faux gems or splash the crown with glitter. Bend and glue wire hanger around the body of the crown to add a sense of fullness and allure. Finally, loop the crown and glue it at the prefabricated markings so you can wear it proudly.
