How to Create a Stage Curtain

Stage curtains add color and function to a theater performance. Stage curtains are usually made of heavy, drape-like fabrics, so preparing and hanging a curtain on the stage can be challenging. Many stage curtains are placed on hooks so they can be opened and closed after the scene or act to provide suspense and ambiance during a performance.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length for your stage curtains. The curtain should reach from the floor of the stage up to the hardware above the stage used for hanging the curtains. When you purchase your fabric, allow for a 2-inch top hem and a 6-inch bottom hem. Measure the width of the stage to determine how many pieces of fabric you will need to seam together.

    • 2

Create pleats in the curtain. Measure 2-inch long folds in the fabric every foot and sew the fold down to the fabric to create a pleating effect.

    • 3

Pin the sections of fabric together using straight pins. Sew each panel together on your sewing machine. Hem 2 inches at the top of the curtain and 6 inches at the bottom of the curtain.

Put the snap hooks into place at the top of the curtain. Hang the curtain on the stage.
