How to Make Clothes From the Bible

Playing dress up is a never-ending source of joy. Making clothes from the Bible, for example, serves to boost the appeal of Sunday school lessons and religious theatre. Get together with friends, family and fellow ministry members to exchange ideas and craft costumes together. Children wearing the clothes have a chance to act out Biblical characters with a greater sense of connection and understanding. Save all of your clothes for use in subsequent ministries and youth groups to keep the enjoyment going.

Instructions

    • 1

Look through Old and New Testament stories for examples of what people wore. Take notes of all mentions of clothing and wardrobe accessories -- jewelry and canes, for instance -- in each story. Read the book of Genesis, for example. Pay attention to Book 3, Verse 21, which reads: "And the LORD God made clothing from animal skins for Adam and his wife." Keep notes handy, when deciding which stories and characters to reenact -- and what clothes to create.

    • 2

Make clothes for boys. Use over-sized robes for noble figures. Hem the bottom of each robe, so the child does not trip -- but allows fullness in the arms and shoulders for the sleeves to push up and the material to sag. Trace and cut patterns for two large rectangular pieces of fabric to make a tunic. Use potato sack-like hide of faux animal skin, if possible. Sew the two triangles together. Cut a hole in the top and one on each side to fit the tunic over the child's head and body. Decorate robes and tunics with leather or metal belts and sandals.

    • 3

Create girls clothes. Drape the head and body of the girl in an over-sized blanket or shawl. Use long silk or cotton robes as outer garments as well. Tie twine around the waste to act as a belt. Put the child in sandals, plain slippers or bare feet. Give the girl beaded jewelry -- necklaces, bracelets and earrings -- made of thin metal and painted gold or silver for aesthetic appeal.

    • 4

Make headdresses for boys and girls. Drape a checkered -- or plain -- piece of satin fabric or a medium-sized hand towel over their heads. Secure the fabric by slipping an elastic headband over their head. Tie a small piece of twine around their foreheads, if necessary, to keep headdresses in place. These should fully cover the skull and drape down the sides and back of their head to their shoulders.
