What is an actor?

1. A person who portrays a character in a performance (such as a play, film, or television show) by taking on the role and adopting their traits and actions

* Example: "John is a brilliant actor. He really transforms into the characters he plays."

2. In computing, an actor or software actor often denotes some computation process whose behavior corresponds to the actions requested to execute and which exhibits autonomous behavior to some degree without direct manipulation

* Example: "Our new system uses a decentralized and concurrent architecture of a system composed of independent and asynchronously interacting software actors for maximum scalability."

3. A person or thing considered in their capacity or function: A person acting according to his capacity.

* Example: "In their roles as public advocates, these celebrities are sometimes cast as political actors."

4. In a military context, An Army unit that carries out the primary battle function under control of a headquarters

* Example: "He's got 20 years worth of service with Army infantry forces and other combat arms actors."

5. In business, a person (or other organizational body) that produces an effect upon some business process

* Example: "Employees, suppliers, clients, regulatory bodies and competitors can all be seen as stakeholders of a specific business process which are therefore called business actors according to a role mining perspective based on stakeholder approach.”
