Choose a website that offers songwriting resources aimed at helping you write better songs. There are many music websites that focus on the specifics of structuring songs, how to read and write notes and symbols in music, and the theory behind music (see resources). The study of music can last a lifetime, so having quick reference guides handy as you write your songs will help you through the process. Since these resources are available online, you can access them from any computer anywhere you happen to be writing.
Sign up for a free account with Noteflight (noteflight.com). Noteflight is a web-based music notation application with extensive songwriting features previously found only in dedicated software such as Finale. Log in to your Noteflight account using your e-mail address and password and you can begin composing songs right away.
Click "New Score" on your Noteflight account page and select "Private" or "Shared" from the box that opens up. This gives you control over who can see your music scores. Noteflight presents you with 16 bars of blank music sheet in 4/4 time. To the right of your blank score is a set of menus where you access tools to set your music in the clef, key and time signature you want to compose in.
Use the floating tool palette to select notes and place them on the staff by moving your mouse to the desired location. You can add ledger lines above and below the staff if need be. Select the "Score" menu and the "Text" option to add song lyrics, chord symbols or notes about the composition. When you're finished with your song, use the "File" menu and select "Save." You can save the composition to your Noteflight account and save a copy on your computer.
Choose the "Play" menu to play all or part of your composition to make sure it sounds the way you want it to sound. You can also do this during the writing process.
Select the "File" menu to add score information, such as title and composer name. You can also print from the file menu. You can choose to export your composition as a .wav file from here as well.
