Punch and Judy shows are believed to have originated in England sometime in the 17th century, evolving from the Italian puppet Commedia dell'Arte, which was introduced to the English public by itinerant showmen. The earliest definitive reference to a Punch and Judy show is in a work published by the writer Samuel Pepys in 1662.
