3. Jocasta tries to calm Oedipus down, but he is too angry to listen.
4. A messenger arrives from Corinth and tells Oedipus that his father, Polybus, is dead.
5. Oedipus is relieved to hear that he is not the murderer of his father, but he is still suspicious of Creon.
6. Jocasta tells Oedipus that Laius was killed at a crossroads, and that the only witness was a shepherd who escaped.
7. Oedipus realizes that he is the man who killed Laius and that he has unknowingly married his own mother.
8. Oedipus is horrified by his actions and gouges out his own eyes.
9. Jocasta hangs herself in shame.
10. Oedipus leaves Thebes and goes into exile.
