How to Construct Scene Synopsis Pages for Plays

Scene synopsis pages let the reader know where each scene takes place before they read the play. This helps producers and directors estimate what kind of budget they need before they read the play. The information on the scene synopsis page is sometimes used as a guide for the audience to know where the play is taking place.

Instructions

    • 1

Read through the play and write down the specific scene locations. You do not need to note the costumes or props needed.

    • 2

Start with a blank page and write "Scene Synopsis" in the center at the top of the page.

    • 3

Skip two lines and right align the rest of the page. Right align means to start at the right margin of the page.

    • 4

Write the title or scene number on the right side. For instance, start with something like "Act 1 Scene 1" or "Scene 1: Gas Station." All subsequent scenes need to stay in the format use here.

    • 5

Space over one time and give a description of the location in the scene. Give a basic description. For example, "Act 1 Scene 1: 1950s-style rundown gas station with soda machine in front." If your description wraps around to the next line, indent at the beginning of the second or third line.

    • 6

Skip two lines or double space and add the next scene. Go in the order of the play, Scene 1, Scene 2 and so on. Continue until all the scenes and their correlating description are located on the page.

    • 7

Place the page at the front of the play, behind the title page.
