What deal does danforth try to make with john proctor?

In the play "The Crucible", Danforth tries to make a deal with John Proctor by offering him his life if he will confess to witchcraft and denounce others. Danforth believes that Proctor is a key witness against Abigail Williams and the other accused witches, and that his confession would help to end the hysteria in Salem. However, Proctor refuses to cooperate, and he is eventually sentenced to death.
