Russell Jr. was born in San Leandro, California, on July 19, 1970. He attended Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward, California, where he was a four-year letterman. He then played college basketball for the Missouri Tigers from 1989 to 1993.
In the 1993 NBA draft, Russell Jr. was selected 12th overall by the Warriors. He played for the Warriors for four seasons, averaging 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.
In 1997, Russell Jr. was traded to the Kings. He played for the Kings for three seasons, averaging 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists per game.
In 2000, Russell Jr. was traded to the Bobcats. He played for the Bobcats for two seasons, averaging 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game.
In 2002, Russell Jr. was traded to the Trail Blazers. He played for the Trail Blazers for two seasons, averaging 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists per game.
In 2004, Russell Jr. was traded to the Pacers. He played for the Pacers for one season, averaging 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists per game.
Russell Jr. retired from the NBA in 2005. He is currently an analyst for the Pac-12 Network.
