The Globe Theatre was a theatre in London associated with William Shakespeare. It was built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company, the Lord Chamberlain's Men, and was destroyed by fire on 29 June 1613. A second Globe Theatre was built on the same site by 1614 and remained in use until 1642, when it was closed by the Puritans. The Globe was one of the most popular theatres in London, and it is estimated that it could hold up to 3,000 people. Shakespeare wrote many of his plays for the Globe, including Hamlet, Othello, and King Lear.
