Who closed the globe theatre and why?

The Globe Theatre was closed by order of the Puritan authorities in 1642, on the grounds that it was a place of vice and immorality. For some time, the Puritans had considered the theatre to be a sinful institution, mainly due to the fact that both male and female actors performed at the theatre, which was considered to be highly improper at the time. The theatre was also seen as a place where the lower classes could gather and potentially cause public disorder.
