After the original Globe burned down in 1613, it was rebuilt and reopened on the same site in 1614. However, the theatre was closed down by the Puritans in 1642 and was subsequently demolished in 1644.
In 1994, a replica of the Globe was constructed on the south bank of the River Thames, not far from the site of the original theatre. The current Globe is used for performances of Shakespeare's plays and other theatrical productions.
