The Austin Steam Train was built in the 1920s with full service until the 1960s. Now, the rail is used for specialty events out of Cedar Park, including several murder mystery events throughout the year. The mystery rides involve themes such as Ghostbusters and the Wild West, with prices ranging from $50 to $75 a rider (as of March 2010) and discounts for visitors under 21. Rides typically include food and drink, and there are some age restrictions for children.

The Grapevine Vintage Railroad in Fort Worth travels between the Grapevine and Fort Worth stockyards, known as the Cotton Belt. The rail has special holiday murder mystery events, surrounding days such as the Fourth of July and Halloween. Customers can also hire some lines for private use, and groups have been known to host their own murder mystery evenings for corporate or birthday events.The rides are family-friendly and appropriate for older children, and prices start at $10, with rides lasting approximately two to five hours.

The Texas State Railroad occasionally runs mystery rides to complement its season of novelty events. The rail has been known to host murder mystery evenings with a national company, Murder Mystery Weekend, Inc. These events are in the evening and not appropriate for children. The rail also hosts Wild West, Halloween and bandit themed events, which some older children may be able to handle. Tickets average $40 to $45, with discounts for children 11 and under. Trains depart from various locations.
