How to Operate Dimmer Packs

One of the most exciting things about any theatrical production is the ability to use different levels of light to create moods. The tool which helps light designers control the light intensity is called a dimmer pack. This piece of equipment can provide a steady stream of variable electricity to the lighting instrument in a safe manner. While the dimmer pack may seem difficult to use, it is actually quite straightforward and can help set the mood and tone of the play.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the dimmer pack into a power source. Depending on the wattage load the dimmer pack may need to plug directly into an electrical panel.

    • 2

Plug one end of the DMX cable into the back of the dimmer pack and the other end of the cable into the light control board. The DMX cable is what allows the control board to talk to the dimmer pack and tell it what level to set the light at.

    • 3

Turn on each of the dimmers in the dimmer pack. Usually there is a switch for each dimmer on the pack itself. Follow the instruction manual that came with the equipment to determine the location of the switches.

    • 4

Plug the light instruments into the dimmer pack. You may have to first plug the lights into circuits which then get plugged into the dimmers, but either way the light gets its electricity from the dimmer pack.

    • 5

Turn on the light control board. You can now use the board to control the light level.

    • 6

Press the DMX/Chase button on the dimmer pack. Each dimmer should have this button. This button will change the setting from DMX, which will allow you to increase and decrease the light intensity, to Chase, which will turn the light either on or off.
