How to Operate an 8mm Projector

Films shot on the 8mm format can only be shown with a special 8mm projector. Because 8mm film was introduced decades ago, in 1932, there is a large legacy of these films, including generations of home movies and many shorts. Proper operation of an 8mm projector can enable you to enjoy these films that might have otherwise been lost.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your projector and projection screen. Make sure the projector's reel arms are fully extended, and that they click or lock into place.

    • 2

Put the reels onto the spindles of the reel arms. Place the reel with the film on it on the front arm and the empty transfer reel on the rear arm.

    • 3

Push the directional lever to forward. Run the projector forward for a moment before threading the film to ensure the rewind clutch has disengaged. This prevents film breakage.

    • 4

Put your projector on the appropriate setting for film threading (the projector's manual will contain this information). Insert the front edge of the film into the threading slot, and wait until the rear reel has begun to automatically collect the film. Turn the setting control to the position that activates the lamp.

    • 5

Adjust the picture using the focus ring on the lens and the framing control. Continue to adjust the image until your projected result has stopped shuddering and is clearly in focus.

    • 6

Reinsert the film end into the front spool once the film is over, turn the lamp off and rewind the film. Turn off the projector.
