How to Apply Auguste Clown Makeup

The Auguste clown is a bumbling, goofy character skilled in pratfalls and other slapstick behavior. Often the sidekick or comic relief characters in clown shows, Auguste clowns are beloved by adults and children alike. Their appearance is very specific, using makeup to exaggerate their features in ways that differ from whiteface clowns. They are also one of the few clown types to use flesh-toned makeup as part of their persona. The makeup for an Auguste clown is not difficult to apply but does conform to a few basic rules.

Instructions

    • 1
The eyes and mouth are exaggerated in white.

Apply white makeup on and around your eyes and mouth. The white mouth area should extend out onto your cheeks and chin, going up to the underside of your nose. The white eye area should extend up past your eyebrows.

    • 2

Apply flesh-colored makeup to the rest of your face using your fingers or a makeup sponge. It should extend from your hairline to below your jaw, where it is faded into your skin. Flesh-colored makeup also can stop at the edge of the white, or the two can blend softly together. If you choose to blend the flesh and white makeup, skip the next step.

    • 3

Draw thick outlines around the white mouth and eye areas with a black makeup pencil.

    • 4

Paint a grin in red or black makeup on your lower lip only.

    • 5

Apply a red ball nose and clown wig to complete the look. If you prefer, paint your own nose red instead of wearing a false one.
