Staging Tools

The wealth of audiovisual technology available for purchase and use allows creative thinkers to construct elaborate and effective stage settings for music or theatrical performances. Advancements in digital technology have allowed many elaborate lighting and sound processes to be controlled with computer software or portable hardware devices. Deploying certain basic staging elements will create a foundation on which more elaborate effects and utilities can be added.
  1. Lighting

    • Venues ranging from rock clubs to professional theater companies utilize advanced lighting systems to exaggerate the mood and ambiance of artistic productions. Many lighting technicians mount their light units and visual effect devices to metal trusses. DMX lighting controllers are capable of control light activation and effects by transmitting digital information to individual lighting units connected to the controller with DMX cables. Lighting units that are not configured for use with DMX controllers are not compatible with these advanced lighting systems.

    Sound Production

    • Sound engineers often use microphones and amplifiers to augment the volume of the spoken word or musical performances. Microphones range in size and functionality -- from cordless lapel devices to the standard dynamic microphone used in live music venues around the world.

    Sound Management

    • Audio mixers route incoming signals to any number of output devices such as public address systems and amplifiers. These devices are especially useful in productions that use several different microphones. Because mixers can also balance the volume, equalization and pan settings of incoming signals, these hardware devices enable the fine-tuning of a production during the actual performance. Connect your microphones, speakers and amplifiers to the mixing board using XLR and instrument cables.

    Visual Projection

    • Producers may choose to use video projections during performances. Video projectors can be used in conjunction with computers and other media players to display moving images and sound on larger surfaces.
