Dramatic Play Ideas in March

The month of March represents the ending of winter and the birth of spring. Named to honor the Roman god of war, Mars, this month represents many cultural and natural shifts. Using the attributes of this month to create dramatic plays can refresh and entertain audiences.
  1. St. Patrick's Day

    • This holiday, now observed all over the world, represents the celebration of the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Saint Patrick is known for bringing Christianity to Ireland and for driving out the snakes from the land. Snakes, though most likely symbolic, represented the pagan practices that came before him. This history is rich with dramatic possibilities. Research Saint Patrick's life and gleam from your findings the beginnings of your play. Use your poetic license and add characters. Create a play that tells your version of the life of this saint, and explains why we celebrate him today.

    Ides of March

    • In Shakespeare's play "Julius Caesar," the title character gets a warning from a soothsayer to beware the Ides of March. The prophecy came true when Caesar was killed in cold blood on March 15. This actual event took place in 44 B.C., and will live in infamy. To honor this day, a production of "Julius Caesar" would be a very appropriate production to stage. Market the production as a celebration or to honor the Ides of March.

    Purim

    • The Jewish celebration of Purim is typically celebrated in March. This holiday remembers the Jewish woman Esther and her cousin Mordecai. Esther goes to live with the King of Persia and becomes a favorite of his harem. He makes her queen. Haman, an adviser to the king, hates Mordecai and plans to exterminate the Jewish people in the land. Esther summons the courage to tell the king and Haman is put to death with the rest of his family. This story of God's grace can translate beautifully into a dramatic play, as well as celebrate the Jewish faith.

    Arrival of Maryland's Colonists

    • A legal holiday in Maryland, Maryland Day celebrates the arrival of the first colonists in that state in the 17th century. This day celebrates the arrival of Lord Baltimore on St. Clement's Island with other colonists aboard the two ships, the Dove and the Ark. Do some research into this holiday and format a play outlining the difficulties Lord Baltimore went through to arrive to America safely. This play should be performed in Maryland or for an audience of mostly Maryland natives.

    Spring is Here

    • Another idea for your play in March is that you should simply celebrate spring. Though the beginning of March may still be cold and blustery, the end of March offers kinder weather and a promise of wonderful weather. Write a play about characters coming from out of the darkness, into the light again. The play could be about someone who has been exiled to a cold land and has been given the chance to fight his way back to his sunny home. Or, if you don't want to write a new play, another great idea for a play in March is the play "Spring Awakening." This rock-musical presents themes of awakening sexuality. Just make sure to publicize the show as having mature themes.
