How to Design & Paint for the Theater

Designing and painting for the theater requires artistic vision as well as technical knowledge. Your crew should include members who are skilled in lighting, set design and prop construction as well as drawing or using computer-aided design (CAD) software. The crew should have intricate knowledge of the script before design planning begins. This knowledge will serve as the platform on which every design decision is made.

Instructions

    • 1

Document the props and details needed in each scene based on the script. Create a 3-D drawing or computerized rendering of each scene. Include such details as colors, textures, the actors’ costumes, lighting, floor covering, sound requirements and the audience seating plan.

    • 2

Build a safe and sturdy set. Using flimsy material can prove unsafe for actors and make performances seem less believable. Use modular scenic components to represent furniture pieces. Install weight-bearing platforms to properly support actors who must stand or climb on props. These items can be built or purchased at theatrical prop shops.

    • 3

Construct walls and doors that will not wobble or sway during a performance. Consider the costumes and the required movement of actors before installing special flooring.

    • 4

Paint as needed once the set is complete. Know how light and paint can affect the mood and the tone of each scene. Obtain premixed acrylic, latex and vinyl paints, which are available in an array of colors. Have painting rollers, brushes and spray guns available.

    • 5

Construct the details of your scenes. Use thin wood and extruded polystyrene foam to build trees, flowers, frames and other background objects. These can be created with fabrics, adhesives, construction paper, fiberglass, mesh wire and acrylic paints.

    • 6

Pay attention to potential problems during rehearsals. The actors should be comfortable to perform and the props should not distract from the story.
