What is the free chapel?

The Free Chapel is a chapel in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, England. It was built in the 15th century by Edward IV as a chantry chapel for the souls of his father, Richard, Duke of York, and his brother, Edmund, Earl of Rutland, who were killed in the Wars of the Roses. The chapel is located on the north side of the choir and is reached through the Ambulatory. It is a rectangular building with a vaulted ceiling and is decorated with elaborate carvings and sculptures. The chapel also contains several important medieval tombs, including those of Edward IV and his queen, Elizabeth Woodville.

The Free Chapel is so called because it was not subject to the jurisdiction of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, but was instead the private chapel of the King. It was used by the King and his household for private worship, and was also the venue for royal baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

Today, the Free Chapel is still used for royal ceremonies and events. It is also open to visitors, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Windsor Castle.
