Who played Raoul in Phantom of the Opera?

Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny, is a main character in Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera. The character has appeared in numerous adaptations of the novel, including films and stage musicals.

In the original novel, Raoul is 20 years old and of noble lineage. He is the son of Richard, Comte de Chagny, and his mother's name is never mentioned in the novel.
