How old is opera?

Opera is approximately 400 years old. In 16th century Florence (Italy), there were the first experiments in recitative, one of the hallmarks of opera, in the Camerata de’ Bardi. The first known opera performances were of Jacopo Peri’s Dafne (perf. 1598) and Euridice (perf. 1600).
