Why does Poseidon cast Odysseus into an infinite journey of wandering?

In the Odyssey, Poseidon does not cast Odysseus into an infinite journey of wandering. Although Poseidon does create obstacles for Odysseus' voyage home to Ithaca, these challenges are not infinite because Odysseus successfully returns home at the end of the epic poem.
