Who was Ila Envele?

Ila Envele, Sr. (*1943 − November 11, 2022*) was a Cameroonian politician who served in the Senate of Cameroon.

Early Life and Education:

Envele was born in 1943 in Bityili in the South Province of Cameroon. He obtained a master's degree in economic science and a degree in advanced studies in economic development.

Political Career:

He began his political career as the mayor of Bityili in 1972, a position he held until 1975. He then served as a member of the National Assembly of Cameroon from 1975 to 1982. During this time, he held various positions, including Deputy Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, Chairman of the Economy and Finance Committee, and Chairman of the Cultural and Social Affairs Committee.

In 1982, Envele was appointed Minister of Finance in the government of President Paul Biya, a position he held until 1984. He then served as Minister of Planning from 1984 to 1985.

Senate Career:

Envele was elected to the Senate of Cameroon in 1992, representing the South Province. He was subsequently reelected in 1997, 2002, and 2007. During his time in the Senate, he served as Chairman of the Finance and Budget Committee, Chairman of the Economic and Social Affairs Committee, and Chairman of the External Relations Committee.

In addition to his political career, Envele also held several other positions, including President of the Board of Directors of the National Investment Development Corporation and President of the Federation of Cameroon Football Associations.

He passed away on November 11, 2022, at the age of 79.
