Michael Crawford was the first actor to portray the title character in the musical "The Phantom of the Opera". He originated the role in the West End production in 1986, and played the role for two years. He then reprised the role in the Broadway production in 1988, and played the role for another three years. Crawford received the Olivier Award and a Tony Award for his performance.
