George Bize only wrote the music for his only opera, Carmen, which was based on a novella by Prosper Merimée. Although it was a critical failure at its premiere, it was later revised by Ernest Guiraud and became one of the most popular operas in the world. Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy wrote the original French lyrics for the opera.
